Leaking Taps?

Here are some common causes!

Worn O-Rings

O-Rings are a common part of many pipes in plumbing, and work to seal up gaps where water can escape. These rings are similar to washers, and can become loosened over time, which can cause leaks in the system.

O-rings come in a wide range of materials and compounds, depending on the needs of their application. Some have more elasticity and tear-resistance than others, while some are better suited for use in higher temperatures or harsher environments.

High-temperature sealing o-rings are typically made from compounds that can handle extreme heat without melting or cracking. They are often used in applications that require a high level of performance, such as oil and gas refineries and chemical processing.

Problems with these o-rings can be due to an improper material, poor lubrication or an excessive temperature. These can be solved by changing the material, re-lubricating the O-ring or ensuring it is compatible with the temperature of the system it is in. In that case, you can contact Oak Park Plumbing Service to help you out.

Ball Faucets

A ball faucet is a type of single-handle faucet that uses a metal or plastic ball to control water temperature and volume. Its handles rotate up and down to open and close passages within the ball that control the flow of water through the faucet.

They’re also inexpensive and easy to install. You can find them in bathrooms, kitchens and other high-use areas of the home. If you have a ball faucet, inspect the ball for cracks or wear. A cracked ball valve can lead to leaks around the spout, which is a common problem with this kind of faucet.

Another common cause of leaking faucets is corrosion. This is caused by hard water or a build-up of minerals in the faucet’s plumbing system, particularly if you live in areas where chlorine is actively deposited into the water source by local government authorities.

Mineral deposits will eventually damage the valve seat, causing leaks. A simple solution is to clean the valve seat regularly with white vinegar. Otherwise, you may need to replace the valve seat with the help of professional plumbers. Oak Park Plumbing Service can service your taps so they remain in good working order so you can just enjoy turning on the tap without any issues.

Broken Washers

Washers are used in taps, valves and faucets to seal water leaks. These washers are made of rubber or fibre and are different from gaskets.

Plumbing washers are made of a variety of materials including nylon, neoprene and phenolic. These washers are designed to withstand high temperatures and resist chemicals, corrosion and moisture.

One common problem with washers is that they distort over time, allowing water to leak through. The only solution is to replace the washers because they don't rejuvenate.

Broken hoses and other plumbing parts also contribute to washer issues. Damaged hoses aren’t usually the cause of a leak, but they can be a source of clogs that keep water from draining properly.

If you suspect that your hoses are the cause of your leaking washing machine, take them off and check for obstructions if you feel it's something you're capable of doing without causing other issues.

This will help you to determine if the issue is in your washing machine or your plumbing system. If you’re having a hard time getting your washer working, contact Oak Park Plumbing Service to have it repaired.

Damaged Seals

Plumbing seals are located wherever pipes join together, and prevent water from seeping through. These gaskets are made of rubber, and stay moist under normal use, preventing leaks at the connection points.

However, if seals are not used regularly, they can start to dry out and crack which can result in leaking taps. Fortunately, there are a few ways to keep seals in good working order. You can clean them as part of your routine maintenance schedule.

For example, if you can find the inner plumber within, you can use plumber's putty to seal faucets and drains. It's a soft substance that can work well for reversible seals, but it's not suitable for pressure pipes.

Also, you should avoid using it around plastic materials. The chemicals in the putty can degrade them. If you have to seal a plastic sink, you should use silicone caulk instead. This type of caulk can be more durable and long-lasting than a plumber's putty. It's also less likely to stain your sink.

Changing seals is a plumbing task that is relatively east to do, however, most of the time we are in a hurry and don't really have the plumbing equipment to undertake the task and really, who would want to. Your best bet is to call Oak Park Plumbing and one of our Plumbers will attend and have it sorted in no time at all.
